The Tonys This Year Was BADFUCKINGASS!
Last year was good (who could forget the Opening ''Hello''/''What If Life Were More Like Theatre?'' and Patti Fucking LuPone rocking that lawn mower like a Boss? and The Book of Mormon just as a whole? and James Corden performing One Man, Two Guvnors? and why isn't the whole freakin' ceremony on YouTube in one upload?). And the year before that was even acceptable. But THIS year... please let Neil Patrick Harris host every bloody year, please network producers, you selective assholes?! This bloke knows how to keep a bloody show going. Seriously legitimately. Especially last night. In the name of Lord Voldemort, that opening was something else:
The previous years had crafty opening numbers as well, but then the shows went downhill-uphill from there. Some parts were FUCK YES! while others were meh. This year though... Of all my years of watching the Tonys, I don't think I've ever seen a standing ovation given for one whole minute and six seconds after just the opening number. What was everyone smoking? Thereafter, the ceremony throughout the night was pretty strong, for the most part.
Oh yes, Matilda made it (I wasn't sure if it would but it opened on Broadway in time for the Tonys)! (My new favourite musical, don't mind if I brag; it's being called the new Billy Elliot/Harry Potter of theatre, so I feel no shame for liking a ''kiddy show.'') It was nominated/won for Best Musical, Best Book (Musical), Best Performance by a Featured Actor/Featured Actress/Leading Actor (Musical), Best Original Score, Best Scenic Design (Musical), Best Costume Design (Musical), Best Lighting Design (Musical), Best Direction (Musical), Best Orchestrations, Best Choreography, and Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre. FUCK YES! FUCK YES! FUCK YES! But I will be quick to add, despite how much I hold up this show like Oscar gold, I was a little disappointed and underwhelmed by their performance, compared with how awesome everything else was that night and that it was placed after a really enthusiastic opening number. It wasn't necessarily terrible, but it could have been better. The kids didn't seem as nearly confident and upbeat as they normally do (well, I can imagine, performing at the Tonys on cable network before millions of unseen viewers must be nerve-wracking, even for caffeinated 10-year-olds, so I'll give it to them).
I wasn't the only one who thought this. This thread says it all. One comment reads:
Matilda's score is awesome but yeah that mashup didn't showcase the musical at all. They should have done "Naughty" in full with the four Matildas.
I was really hoping Matilda's performance would have set the stage on fire INSANELY, but I was very underwhelmed by it, compared to what else I've seen of them so far. ;__; The Broadway version is slightly modified from the RSC/West End production (obviously), but both are pretty good from what I've seen. ''Naughty'' with the four Matilda's could have worked out very nicely like with what they did at the Olivier Awards. Or they could have done what they did on The View and Good Morning America. These performances were a lot better, in my opinion.
Well asides from that, everything else that night Kicked Motherfucking Ass:</div>
With that last video, I was really hoping Matilda would take home Best Musical, but I had a very strong feeling it would either be Pippin or Kinky Boots. And the latter ended up winning, so congratulations to the creative team! Although, to some people, absolutely everything in existence must be a competition. I really hate to think of the Tonys in that sort of light (even if the reality of the business truly is) since everyone showcased there brings separate levels of talent and ideas to the stage that is unique to individual perspectives, which to each their own, deserves equal respect. In other words, I didn't realise that people are seriously pressed that Kinky Boots won over Matilda. The comments are mind-boggling (not my grammar, by the way):
how did this win best musical. how.
Matilda was robbed!
How did this win?! Matilda is a masterpiece!!
Those of you leaving bad comments...Have you seen the show other then this clip from an awards show?? Unless you have seen it Live and understand the message, please be kind..these men and women work very hard to bring this to life 8 nights a week. And they are so talented! Yes so are the other shows nominated....but your being harsh.
Let me tel you why this won, because its new! That's why Avenue Q won over Wicked, because it was new! Matilda isn't anything new, it's a show that is just really good but has been seen in similar shows. This is new and quirky and (from friends who have seen it) a truly amazing and beautiful piece of work. That's how it won. So don't give it crap!
Uh, if anything, Kinky Boots isn't new - it's Hairspray-lite...
So how in the world could Mathilda lose to this ? Sigh, how revolting :p
it physically pains me that matilda lost to this
great cast but how did this win best score over the genius of Matilda?!
While I openly stan for Matilda's ass til the end of time, is the show Kinky Boots that horrible because to me it looks like something I would voluntarily sit through for two hours. But no, people are going out of their dunderheaded way to rip this work to shreds for winning. What the actual fuck?! No matter what you damn right do in this business, you can't win.
At least compared to the Tonys, the Oscars looks shittier and shittier every year and eventually, it'll get so shitty to where viewers would mistake it for diarrhea invading their screens. Vomitroucious. I would rather watch Neil Patrick Harris French kissing a dog. Any day. Including ''Hairspray-lite'' Kinky Boots. At least we have something as refreshing as the Tonys that's still running. The Oscars has been done for ages ago. What the fuck should we even be complaining about?! As if Kinky Boots or Matilda can give two shits.
Eh, whatever. Fucking hate people.
